Importance of Delta farmland for wildlife

From the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust website:

"The farmland in Delta is of particular importance to migratory waterfowl. Swans, geese and ducks consume remnant crops that remain after harvest, with potato, carrot, corn and grain fields being very popular "field-feeding" areas. Many of these birds also eat the winter cover crops (grass) planted in these fields, and search out insects, seeds and weeds.

Nearby intertidal marshes and mudflats also provide important sources of foods such as eelgrass, invertebrates and marsh plants. Over the winter, though, these foods are covered by the tide during the day, and the adjacent farm fields provide important upland resting areas as well as food. In the spring, the new growth of cover crops, grasses and nearby marsh plants are all eaten by these birds in preparation for their migration northward."
