Southlands in the 2007 Official Community Plan
Objective D.1: Preserve Agricultural Land
To preserve the farmlands within the Southlands for agricultural uses, thus reinforcing the Official Community Plan objective of preserving farmland for the food production needs of future generations.
Objective D.2: Encourage Agencies To Acquire Farms
Take the lead in attempting to have the “Guichon” and “Spetifore” properties acquired by private non-profit or public agencies or some combination thereof, should the current or any subsequent owners of those properties decide to offer them for sale on the open market.
Policy D.1: Retain Agriculture
Designate all portions of the area referred to as the “Southlands”, as shown on the map entitled “The Southlands”, which is generally east of Forest-By-The-Bay, 56th Street and the west half of Wellburn and Tsawwassen Terrace subdivisions; north of the U.S. border and west of the Boundary Bay subdivisions and the westerly GVRD park boundary as Agricultural.
The area plan is also designed to harmonize with the The Livable Region Strategic Plan and the Metro Vancouver (GVRD) Green Zone.
To get an idea of what the land produced before it became the subject of multiple housing schemes, read "The Then And Now Of The Spetifore Family In The Municipality Of Delta," written by the Spetifore family in 1968.
This is an interesting article by one of the planners involved in the crafting of the Tsawwassen Area Plan entitled: "New Planning Concepts : Preservation of Agriculture and Citizen Rivalries in the Suburbs - The Case of Tsawwassen, Delta, B.C.," City Magazine, Summer, 1993
